Abstract

The causes and consequences of a weak mathematical cultura in Spain along the centurias are reviewed in terms of several critical iniciatives concerning science policy. The attemps to overcome this anomaly by del “Junta de Ampliación de Edstudios” (1907) are described briefly, as well as the frustration of these iniciatives by the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and by the international isolation of the country along the 1940-1960 autarchy period. The onset of the recovery in the 60’s, the take off from 1983 on, and the facts determining the normalization of mathematical research in the frame of the “Ley de la Ciencia” (1986) are described and analyzed in some detail. Eventually, the results so far attained and the prospective of this process are assesed.
