New historical data intellectual Eduardo Garcia Duarte maternal grandfather writer Francisco AyalaAbstract
This article offers new historical data on the maternal grandfather of Granada writer Francisco Ayala García-Duarte (1906-2009) obtained from the transcript and detailed commentary of a personal letter that has recently been discovered. Despite dying just a year prior to the birth of his grandson, Eduardo García Duarte (1830-1905) was an exemplary figure whose presence was felt throughout Ayala’s life. He represents a model of intellectual and personal coherence in the troubled last decades of nineteenth century Spain. Republican and influenced (or perhaps coincident) by the ideas of krausismo, Eduardo persevered as an industrious doctor and devoted teacher, and eventually attained the position of rectorof the University of Granada.
