The development of Astronomical research in Spain during the last 30 years has been truly spectacular. From a handful of active researchers and a dozen scientific publications in international journals in the seventies, the situation has changed to more than 500 active researchers which publish well over 700 papers per year, which represent over 6 % of the total production in the world in this discipline. In this paper we present an overview of several important facts in this rapid evolution and we describe what is the current situation of Astronomy in Spain in the european and world-wide context, both in terms of scientific and technological production, human resources, their training and the key infrastructures.
