Antarctica and its surrounding seas have a particular interest for scientists because they treasure up lots of information on the planet’s past and the evolution of its species. Isolation is the main cause of ignorance on Antarctica since only as recently as in the middle of last century began the truly scientific expeditions there. In the eighties a special attention arouse in the Spanish research community towards this continent. This phenomenon added to the political incentive of becoming a member of the Washington Treaty caused the installation of a base and the launching of an oceanographic ship. Since 1987 yearly expeditions are sent there with an average of 140 scientists who carry out research both on board the ship Hesperides and in the two settlements, King Juan Carlos I and Admiral Gabriel de Castilla.
