The anniversary of Freud’s birth has been “celebrated” with several articles which show both the ignorance about his work and the passion and lack of logic of the critiques. The virulence of the attacks suggests that the rejection is less intellectual than emotional and proves, besides, the vitality of psychoanalysis. It is not only a method of research of the unconscious which has psychotherapeutic effects and a theory that accounts for the findings of that method; its discoveries represented a radical change in the idealized conception of the illustration’s subject, calling into question his narcissistic self-representation. It is pertinent then to consider the concepts which hurt that image. Nevertheless, the majority of critiques refer to psychoanalysis as a psychotherapeutic method, so it is interesting to contrast them with the technical principles exposed by Freud, in order to show their arbitrariness, which can only be based on ignorance or on resistances.
