Before 1579, the year in which El Greco painted El expolio, a painter from Toledo, Juan Correa de Vivar, had depicted this subject four times in the 40s, 50s and 60s. The iconographic anomalies of the subject with regard to Canonical Gospels, which appear in Correa´s compositions, stem from medieval mystical literature, related to the Cistercian Order.
