Abstract

I start out with the idea that the challenges and the difficulties that science and academy present to women vary according to the discipline, social class and national origin. I then move into a personal reflection of the experience of a Colombian anthropologist in the United States. The aim is to expose and analyze the perceptions, representations and obstacles that women from the south face in the scientific community of the north, and the limited recognition that they have received historically in relation to their colleagues, that are not from the Third World. In addition to discussing structural difficulties, the article shows the barriers, inconveniences, and daily wounds, that in the long run, produce bigger injuries and affect professional careers. The options and survival strategies that women have in their efforts to become scientists are also presented.
