Abstract

Changes in a literary genre bear witness of the modification of identity in history. Novel and romance are the ‘modes’ through which characters define their changing identity starting from Ariosto and Cervantes. Austen and Scott, Manzoni, Stendhal, Flaubert, Pirandello, Calvino and Antonia Byatt provide examples of how fully characters are aware of this connection between ‘mode’ and identity.
