Who am I? Who are they? These are the questions haunting the characters, created by writers such as Ibsen, Pirandello, Beckett and others, whose emblematic search for identity is explored in the article. The complex interconnections between subjectivity and alterity are focused within the coordinates of space (society) and time (memory) in their outward and inward movement. The characters are seen on stage relating also to the otherness of actors and spectators. Particular relief is given to the difference between the female and male search for identity in the light of contemporary historical changes.
