Antonia S. Byatt nació en 1936, en Sheffield, Yorkshire. Es una de las novelistas mas complejas e intensas en lengua inglesa del momento. Inició su andadura en la literatura como profesora y crítica, y esta doble faceta le fue muy útil a la hora de pergeñar qué y cómo escribir. Si algo caracteriza la literatura moderna es que los narradores no suelen juzgar, sino que ofrecen los distintos puntos de vista para que sea el lector quien saque conclusiones. Si algo caracteriza su prosa es el virtuosismo con que da voz y verosimilitud a los personajes que habitan sus novelas. Algunos críticos la han tildado de victoriana postmoderna, debido a sus gustos refinados y, qué duda cabe, a que sus textos ponen de manifiesto su formación: su estilo es literario; los personajes pertenecen al que fue su ámbito académico; las referencias cultas y las disquisiciones intrincadas son ella misma. una gran propuesta.
