La gestión del lobo en España. Controversias científicas en torno a su caza

Resumen

El lobo (Canis lupus) disminuyó en España durante gran parte del siglo XX. Pero a partir de los años 70, comenzó una recuperación que ha continuado hasta la actualidad, cuando se estima la presencia de más de 2.000 ejemplares en unos 115.000 km2 del cuadrante noroccidental español. Los conflictos con el ganado convierten al lobo en una especie polémica y obligan a su control en algunas zonas de España. Su gran capacidad de adaptación y su elevado potencial reproductivo permiten su explotación cinegética. Sin embargo, el lobo es una especie simbólica en un importante sector de la población, lo que añade complejidad a la regulación de su caza y a toda su gestión. Este artículo describe la gestión del lobo en las distintas comunidades autónomas españolas y los aspectos ecológicos y sociales que explican el conflicto del lobo. Mediante una revisión bibliográfica, discutimos el papel de la caza y el turismo del lobo en el desarrollo rural, y se presentan los debates actuales sobre si la caza mejora la percepción del lobo y reduce el furtivismo y los daños al ganado.
