Many researchers and writers have written about the legend of the Monastery de la Encarnación, formerly the convent of San Plácido, starting, in many cases, with the text published by Carlos García Doncel in the Semanario Pintoresco Español . The sect of the Illuminati, the convent’s “possessed”, Felipe IV’s love affair with the novice Margarita, and the clock that the King bought her as a present, which sounded a death knell each quarter, are the core narrative elements of the legend of the clock of San Plácido.
