The study of light, its nature and properties was a central topic in the works of Albert Einstein. This paper discusses the role of light in the formulation of special relativity, in particular as a tool to provide operational definitions of the basic kinematic concepts. It also discusses the role of light in understanding general relativity and ends by briefly considering its quantum behaviour.
