This paper analyzes from an anthropological point of view the connection between more or less closed groups and the development of specialized knowledges. Those knowledges could be of a strictly technical nature, like in the case of the blacksmiths and potters, of a religious and ritual nature, or of adulthood. It is studied also the correlation between the membership in those groups and the emergence or consolidation of a different range of privileges, either economic, social or merely symbolic privileges.
