Some considerations about “Lejana”

The theme of alter ego and the connection of man with its other “I” by traversing the distances through space has emerged in many stories of Julio Cortázar. The subject relates with the separating of individuality and doubling of the man’s Identity. The transmutation of protagonist’s character and the alter ego appears in “Lejana”, one of the short stories of Bestiario (1951). It should be noted that in some stories of Julio Cortázar, the alter ego is clearly separated from the character of protagonist, but in “Lejana”, although there is a large physical distance between them, alter ego has manifested in and out of the protagonist. First it comes within, but finally appears out of her as a real presence in an especial physical place in Budapest. This article studies one of the Cortazarian stories, “Lejana” in which the subject of alter ego is defined clearly and the protagonist finds herself suddenly with a new identity.
